"aulofée" Album Reviews

Christophe Rodriguez (Journal de Montréal, 2012-04-08) : «»

Christophe Rodriguez (Sortiesjazznights.com, 2012-02-23) : «The discreet pianist and very caring teacher Andrée Boudreau launched her third CD, Aulofée, Feb 22nd at Upstairs. In the midst of busy week where legendary pianist Ahmad Jamal's latest CD (Blue Moon/ Small Village) practically threw to the ground, Andrée's Aulofée is like a fine wine and in the same lineage. The pianist doesn't do the standards and is sided by Claude Bergeron, guitar, Richard Dupuis, bass and Dany Richard, drums/percussions, who explore eleven original compositions that each stand out in the own way. Subtle rhythm changes to vibrant and complex grooves that reflect the classics :  Monk, Jamal, Jarrett as well as Bill Evans, Andrée Boudreau celebrates with sensuality.Aulofée, of course, but also À la voletteSamba d’août and Sicilienne.

"Andrée Boudreau / Trio" Album Reviews

Stanley Péan (VOIR Montréal, 2008-01-02) : «She has long been awaited, but it was well worth it! Not only did the magnificent Andrée Boudreau take part in clarinet-player Mathieu Bélanger’s first album, launched this fall (Insomnia, Disques XXI), but this pianist and composer has finally released a second album, recorded with long-time partners François Marion (string bass) and Danny Richard (drums). We are entitled to ten pieces, including two traditional songs rearranged by the leader (Un Canadien errant and Souvenir d'un vieillard) that showcase Boudreau’s diverse inspiration and great mastery. The climax of this album: Rachmaninov à Cuba. This piece in itself justifies the record.»

Alain Brunet (La Presse, 2008-01-01) : «This Gaspé Peninsula-native’s self-production can be sipped down with no aftertaste. Andrée Boudreau is not, and will never be a master; however, her approach has reached the maturity level of hardcore professionals, worthy of our jazz community.

Her sense of cohesion, the resonance of her keyboard, her refined harmonic progressions, the melodic sensibility and the accuracy of her performance lead to believe that she could satisfy any fluid and smooth jazz-lover. Moreover, she masters the art of the acoustic trio, an ability that she masterfully shares with bassist François Marion and drummer Dany Richard.

Aside from the convincing “jazzifications” of Un Canadien errant and Souvenir d'un vieillard, Andrée Boudreau offers a repertoire made up of her own works, inspired from various states of being: dormancy, wandering, wait, insanity, appeal, travel, memories, suspension, aging, fear of losing someone, combined with a musical fantasy about Sergueï Rachmaninov (whose works are a key part of piano teaching) meeting Cuban culture. Andrée Boudreau is very soul-moving... » JAZZ***1/2»

"Berceuse pour Philou", EFFENDI, Album Reviews

Stanley Péan (VOIR Montréal, 2008-01-01) : «Following Alain Labonté’s invitation, 15 local pop and jazz pianists give a solo performance of an original and unpublished composition in support of the Centre de répit Philou, a charitable organization that helps heavily disabled children’s parents by welcoming their children for short stays, to allow their families to take a break. This is a truly admirable project, to which André Gagnon, Julie Lamontagne, Oliver Jones, Lorraine Desmarais, and all the others, have generously and kindly agreed to participate. From this varied album, as varied as the many participating pianists, the contributions of Yves Léveillé, Andrée Boudreau and Coral Egan are (at least in my opinion) those that stand out most.»

"Pourquoi", EFFENDI, Album Reviews

Thierry Quénum (Piano Magazine, France, 2003-01-01) : «…Quebec pianist Andrée Boudreau arrives on our side of the Atlantic with a very convincing first album. Straight away, her music appears as lively, heart-throbbing and happiness-exuding. As it is listened to, it eventually gains depth and precision that never dull the initial freshness: such is the impression that this woman’s compositions leave.

Song is constantly implied throughout Boudreau’s performance, which bears a round and straightforward touch, without ever being excessively sophisticated, and remaining essentially focused on sound fullness and expressiveness.»

Michel Bedin (Jazz Hot, France, 2003-01-01) : «Andrée Boudreau is a Quebec pianist who performs delicately, yet never lacks energy or power. The audience is entitled to very soft, yet powerful tracks written by her, and to two westcoast-jazzified Quebec songs… A very lively CD, and a very promising one for this lovely pianist.»

Stanley Péan (www.radio-canada.ca, 2002-01-01) : «Finally! Such is the average jazz-lover’s most legitimate reaction to seeing pianist Andrée Boudreau’s first album release. And for good reason! With excellent support from talented collaborators, Boudreau’s Pourquoi is a more than decent first attempt that portends that the best is yet to come.

From the eponymous title, which closely resembles Jarrett’s trio exploits, to the last one, White Night, a solo title that is readily reminiscent of Evans’ impressionistic thoughts, everything exudes an attention to clear enunciation and seductive phrases, which brings major credit to Andrée Boudreau.»

Christophe Rodriguez (ICI Montréal, 2002-01-01) : «Andrée Boudreau, why? Pourquoi? Because you had to do it, my dear Andrée! Jazz-lovers, you are warned that this record contains a thousand and one secrets that this pianist and teacher at the Collège Lionel-Groulx, and only she, holds.

There is something good, and even something very good, in her performance. When listening, Bill Evans inevitably comes to mind, but so does Brad Mehldau…9.5/10»
